What is YAG Laser Treatment?
YAG laser treatment is a common method used for the removal of hemangiomas, which are benign vascular tumors composed of blood vessels.
The YAG laser emits a high-intensity beam of light that can target and destroy the blood vessels within the hemangioma. The laser energy is absorbed by the blood vessels, causing them to heat up and coagulate. Over time, the body’s natural healing processes remove the damaged blood vessels, resulting in the reduction or elimination of the hemangioma. The procedure itself is relatively quick, but the total number of sessions required may vary depending on the individual case.
YAG laser can be used for the treatment of telangiectasias, which are small, dilated blood vessels near the surface of the skin. Telangiectasias, also known as spider veins or broken capillaries, commonly appear on the face, legs, and other areas of the body. YAG laser treatment for telangiectasias is often referred to as laser vein therapy or laser vascular treatment.
The YAG laser’s wavelength can target hemoglobin, the pigment found in red blood cells, making it effective for treating telangiectasias. The laser energy is absorbed by the blood vessels, causing them to coagulate and eventually be reabsorbed by the body. The surrounding skin remains largely unaffected during the treatment.

Benefits of YAG Laser Treatment
-
Non-invasive and precise: Targets vascular concerns without damaging surrounding tissue
-
Minimal downtime: Most patients resume normal activities shortly after treatment
-
Effective results: Reduces or eliminates the appearance of hemangiomas and spider veins
-
Safe for various skin types: Advanced laser technology allows for customizable treatment
What to Expect During Treatment
After the YAG laser treatment, the treated area may appear red and swollen for a few days. Some mild discomfort and bruising may also occur, but these side effects typically subside relatively quickly. It’s important to follow post-treatment care instructions provided by the healthcare professional to promote healing and minimize the risk of complications.

YAG Laser Treatment FAQs
A YAG laser may be used to reduce the appearance of certain spider veins, broken capillaries, telangiectasias, and vascular lesions. Its longer wavelength can reach vessels beneath the skin while limiting the effect on nearby tissue. Treatment suitability depends on the vessel’s size, color, depth, location, and underlying cause. Because not every red or purple mark is a treatable blood vessel, the Treasure Valley team will first evaluate the area and confirm whether laser vascular treatment is appropriate.
YAG laser treatment can address selected vessels on the face and legs, but these areas may require different treatment settings and planning. Small facial vessels are often more superficial, whereas leg veins may be deeper or associated with an underlying circulatory issue. Large, raised, twisted, painful, or symptomatic leg veins may require evaluation by a vascular specialist rather than cosmetic laser treatment.
Comfort varies by treatment area, vessel depth, and individual sensitivity. Some people describe each laser pulse as a brief snapping, stinging, or warming sensation. Cooling may be used to protect the skin and improve comfort. Treatment is generally well tolerated.
Patients should follow the personalized directions provided during their consultation:
- Avoiding tanning and unnecessary sun exposure
- Applying broad-spectrum sunscreen to exposed skin
- Disclosing medications, supplements, and health conditions
- Avoiding irritating products when instructed
- Arriving with clean skin free from lotion or self-tanner
- Discussing pregnancy, photosensitivity, or a history of poor wound healing
Treated vessels do not always disappear immediately. Some may darken temporarily before gradually fading as the body clears them. Changes may become more noticeable over several weeks. According to the University of Florida Department of Dermatology, results from Nd:YAG laser vein therapy may take approximately four to six weeks to appear. The response varies by vessel, treatment area, and individual healing process.
Some vascular concerns improve after one appointment, while others require a series of treatments. The number of YAG laser sessions needed depends on:
- The number and size of the vessels
- Vessel depth and color
- The location being treated
- The skin’s response
- The desired degree of improvement
Sessions must be spaced far enough apart to allow the skin and treated vessels to respond.
Laser treatment targets visible vessels that are already present; it does not prevent every new vessel from developing. Genetics, aging, hormonal changes, sun exposure, pregnancy, prolonged sitting or standing, and circulation concerns may contribute to new spider veins. Results in successfully treated vessels may be long-lasting, but maintenance treatment may eventually be considered if other vessels appear.
A 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser may be considered for a range of skin tones because its wavelength can reach deeper vessels with less absorption by surface pigment than some other light-based technologies. However, treatment is not automatically suitable or risk-free for every complexion. Skin tone, recent tanning, lesion type, and medical history must guide device settings.
